"Welcome Home" - the block! |
I am so excited to be able to finally show you my block (and quilt!) that appears in
Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 4. This is one of those blocks that at first just couldn't find a home. I try to design something (a block, a quilt, a motif - something) everyday. Some aren't good, but some are! And some of the good ones just can't find a home in a quilt despite being good! Originally I intended this block to go in some sort of sampler quilt. Well, that quilt never happened, but the block was just too darn good to not do something with. So when I had the opportunity to submit a block to
Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 4, I knew it was the perfect block!
This pineapple block is called "Welcome Home" because a pineapple historically is a sign of welcome and hospitality. Aren't quilters nothing if not hospitable!? And, we love making things with meaning.
 |
"Welcome Home" - the quilt! 21" square I wanted a small wall hanging to put by the front door. |
I also submitted a quilt made from the block to the magazine and it was chosen to go in the gallery at the back (page 88 if you're interested). It's really simple to make. After you make the 12" Welcome Home block (page 19) you need to make 9 - 3" nine-patch blocks and 5 - 3" hour glass blocks. Place them around the block as makes sense to you and fill in with 3" wide strips (cut 3 1/2"). This is a very traditional/country version. I'd love to see what a Modern quilter or another Traditional quilter could come up with!
 |
I'm so glad "Welcome Home" finally found a home at Quiltmaker! |
Quiltmaker is generously offering a free copy of the magazine to one of my readers and I'm going to match that giveaway! So you have 2 chances to win Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Vol. 4. To enter, leave a comment saying what color combinations you would make your quilt in. (And click the link:

ReplyDeleteCongrats on your block! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower of your blog already, and I'm wishing for your new book for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I could improve on your color choices -- they just seem right. I would love a couple of these blocks on the ends of a table runner for my dining room so I might adjust the colors to coordinate with my decor -- darker greens, cranberry, taupe and a touch of blue.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I'm a follower...love your BOW's, trying to catch up right now as I got into too many projects at once this fall...
ReplyDeleteI like you on FB!
ReplyDeleteI am following you, too.
ReplyDeleteI would use a WARM neutrals color palette with dark brown as the "bottom" and a shot of turquoise here and there and maybe a spot of spring green. Gosh. Three comments in a row. I look like a creeper.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a favorite block for me - combing piecing and applique - yum. I am seeing a cotton/wool combination. I have to add you to my daily blog list.
ReplyDeleteI would use bright yellows and greens for the pineapples, probably batiks, then add other bright colors, orange would probably be in there also.
ReplyDeleteI am already a follower, and will also look for you on facebook!
ReplyDeleteI love your Welcome Home quilt. I really like the colors you used - I would probably use a little less green and a little more red. Thanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeletei love the way you laid out this block! I am loving navy blue right now, with colors like fushia, gray, and lavender - maybe with a touch of orange?
ReplyDeleteWhat a great block! I love the hospitality tie in. Thanks for the chance to win :-)
ReplyDeleteI think I would make the pineapple more yellow, and then use lighter green to make it for summer or spring.

ReplyDeleteVery pretty block. I am a big fan of pieced and appliqued blocks so really enjoyed this one. I would make it in browns, golds and greens.
ReplyDeleteI think mine would be a little more vibrant in colors (with the exception of the pineapples themselves). Maybe in roses, greens, blues and tans. Honestly, I don't know! LOL. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy sister has been asking for a pineapple quilt... this will work perfectly.. I am a true believer in this magizine. Thank you..
ReplyDeleteGreat block. I would experiment with bright yellows and oranges with green accents.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great table center piece that would make. I would have to say rich tone browns and oranges with a hint of greens.
ReplyDeleteI love your block! I would love this in Fall colors! And even Christmas colors would work too. Thanks for sharing a copy of 100 Blocks. I have so enjoyed the previous issues.
ReplyDeleteI really like blues, with the pineapple yellow to show ripe fruit. Lovely block
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful block, and quilt. I love the fall colors you used. It is a great year round block. Thank you for sharing. I am a new follower.
ReplyDeleteI love this block! I would pretty much use the same colors, but would shade my "oranges" from terra cotta down to coral, golden tones for the pineapples of course, and my greens possibly going slightly toward bluegreen...and I really don't want to wait until next week for the magazine to come out...but I'll be willing to wait if I win it to join the other 3 issues! Thank you for so many opportunities!
ReplyDeleteI have also liked you on facebook!

I love using blues and purples but am also loving the brighter colors quite a bit too. I guess the day I chose to maybe do this it would really depend on my mood as to what it might end up being as far as colors. It's a great block though, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super block. I really like the fabric of your pineapples. I would use similiar colors maybe just alittle brighter. This would look great by our front door. Thanks for the giveaway.
