Modern Monday - Block 12

Winged Square
(Note: If this is your first visit to the NEW 42 Quilts, please read the previous post, below. Thanks!)
Block 12 - Winged Square
Don't let the 51 pieces in this block scare you! Once the HSTs are done, it goes really fast and since we're not worried about precision so much, it really is low-stress! (See the bottom for your out clause!)

I chose light gray for the background, an orange print for the HSTs and a blue solid for the center accent piece.

From the background, cut 24 - 1 1/2" squares AND 2 - 2 1/2" square
From the orange print, cut 12 - 2 1/2" squares and cut in half on the diagonal (Note: this is really big, you could get by with cutting these 2" - 2 1/4")
From the accent, cut 1 - 2 1/2" square

These are my fabrics I chose.

And here they are cut.
Make 24 - 1 1/2" unfinished HSTs. To do this, I cut off the corners of each of the small background squares on different angles.

Here they are cut.
Place the gray background on top of the orange triangles and sew as shown. Chain piecing works well here.

Here it is once sewn. You can see how the orange is plenty big. Feel free to cut yours smaller.

Press open, to the orange and trim to 1 1/2". Sew the squares into 6 four-patch units, making sure the triangles all face the same direction.

Layout the sections as shown and sew together as a 9-patch. The block will be 6 1/2" unfinished. Make sure to place the 4-patches the right direction. They are opposite  on the bottom side from the top side.
If making all these SMALL half-square triangle units is too much for you during this busy Christmastime, there is an out clause! Just simply make 6 HSTs that finish to 2" and swap out for the 4-patch units. It will look similar to the Mosaic block, but it will be nice still! Whatever way you make it, it will be great!

  1. Like the looks of your new blog site and glad you're keeping MM and TT. I am behind in getting the MM blocks finished but have 5 done. Thanks for the inspiration :)

  2. Your new site looks great, very fresh. Thanks so much for the "out" with this block, I am definitely taking you up on it. I am also way behind, only four done and still need framing. Really looking forward to working on them as soon as I can, being inaccurate and messing with points is so much fun.

  3. Whew!! I just finished this block and it turned out pretty close to 6.5" square! You need to amend the cutting instructions though. You need 2 2.5" squares of background. No biggie, I just cut another square before I could put my block together.

  4. Yes, Lynn, you are correct, it should be cut 2 - 2 1/2" background squares. I'll change it right now. Thanks!

  5. I think that was the most challenging square I've ever done. I've always thought the traditional version of this was a bit stuffy. This one was AWESOME! Thanks for the how to.
