Modern Monday - Block 13

9 Patch
Block 13 - 9 Patch
Since we're all busy this holiday season, I thought it would be nice to do something easy this week! So what's easier than a 9 Patch? This one uses scraps and mishaps from previous blocks to make it go together in an interesting way with no more work than using plain fabric.

I chose grays and white to offset the "pieced" squares. Cut these into 2 1/2" squares.

First, sort through all your scraps to see what you have. I have a miss-mash of pieced "rejects" and leftovers that I've been holding on to. Of these, I looked for ones that were larger than 2 1/2" square that had interesting colors or shapes. In the end, I chose ones that had mostly vertical pieced wedges to give it a little continuity.
Once I determined the three sections I wanted to use, I cut them into 2 1/2" squares. I have a neat little 2 1/2" acrylic square for this. I don't remember why I got this but I sure use it more than you'd think! I chose to use 3 pieced squares for my block. You might choose to use more depending on what you have in your stash. If you don't have many options, you can substitute with plain squares.

Once you have your squares cut, lay them out in a pleasing way. There's no need to set this block like a traditional 9 Patch if you don't want to!

Sew into rows and join the rows to finish the block. It will be 6 1/2" unfinished. You can see that once I laid out my block, I decided that having 4 gray squares all the same wasn't going to work for me, so I swapped out two of the grays for a darker shade. This is much better IMHO!
