Modern Monday - Block 23

Block 23 - Chinese Coins
This block has got to be the Modern Quilter's go-to block. It is just perfect - wedges of any size, scraps of all colors and interesting to look at all in one little design! Fabulous!

This is another scrap-user, so dig out all those little pieces you've been saving, but you don't know why!

Here's the pile of my MM fabrics. I'm over-running the bin a little bit!
I dug through it all and made piles of orange solids, gray solids, orange prints, blues and scraps.
From there, I pulled a variety of each. Make sure your scraps are at least 2 1/2" wide. 3" would be better for squaring up. Cut them randomly into wedges. Make your tapers from about 1 1/2" down to 1/2" or so. Make some fatter and some skinnier.
Here's some of the wedges. I laid them out trying to scatter the values and colors equally throughout. I wasn't too picky about this, I just didn't want all the grays to be lumped together or all the darks, etc. Cut more than you think you need. These tend to shrink up a lot when sewing. Make three columns that are larger than 2 1/2" x 6 1/2". Keep in mind that when sewing wedges, they won't stay straight on the sides, so you'll need wiggle room for squaring up. (Sorry, I thought I took a shot showing this, but I guess I didn't!)
Once your three columns are sewn, square them up to 2 1/2" x 6 1/2". Sew them together, pressing seams to one side. Your block should be 6 1/2" unfinished.
