Quiltmaker's 100 Block Blog Tour
Welcome to Quiltmaker's 100 Block Blog Tour! This is the second issue I've been in, and it's so much fun to be a part of the festivities. Today, I'm happy to finally be able to show you my block, Window Panes. It's an original block with lots of Modern inspiration!
It's no secret how much I love solids! I've always used lots of solids, near solids or small prints that read as solids in my quilts. Now that solids are so popular, I use them with abandon! This block reflects that. And of course, gray is the unofficial color of Modern quilting, so I used that abundantly, too! I just threw in the orange for accent and blue for a little kick of subtle color.
I also wanted to show you this table topper I designed to make with the block. Doesn't it look like the windows on a sky scraper? Well, maybe not so much, but it does have an urban look to me! If you want to make this 58" square topper, all you have to do is make 16 Window Pane blocks using the directions on page 52 of the magazine. Then rotate them until you're happy with the way it looks and sew together with 2 1/2" wide sashing strips. I used gray corner stones to enhance the chain effect, so pay attention to those (two in the top and bottom sashing rows and one in the center of the quilt.) Send me a picture of your finished topper - I'd love to see it!
I was also thrilled that my block made the cover! See it? It's the middle block on the very top row!
Now for the contest. Quiltmaker is generously giving away a magazine to one lucky reader and I am going to match that. So two readers will win a copy! All you need to do is leave a comment saying what colors you would make your Window Panes block in! I love hearing what colors others like to work with!
For an extra chance to win, sign up to follow my blog and/or like my Facebook page. So answer the question for one chance, follow or like me for a second chance (leave a second comment saying you did). If you already follow me or like me, tell me that and you're entered twice as well. I'll draw the winners this Friday morning at 10 a.m. Good luck!
Don't forget to go to Quiltmaker's blog to find out other ways to win a prize! They are giving away great stuff!

I like this block, Jenifer! I would probably make it without sashing. I think that the sashing within the block being off-center makes it more interesting. I often start my designs using yellow, orange and maroon.
ReplyDeleteI think I would use yellows and whites with a brown sashing. I love the look of the block
ReplyDeleteHmmm, maybe to make it even more "building-like" I would use a dark & light gray, with a light blue & light yellow for the windows. :D It is definitely a fun block!
ReplyDeleteI would use pink, yellow and gray with white. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteI "like" you on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteRight now I love anything in Aqua, Lime and Yellow so I might try that. Or I might pick colors to match my family room and make pillows. That would be cool.
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteI would try it in blue, yellow, and black for the look of windows at night. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI'm really into browns and aqua right now, but I would be hard pressed not to use some of my favourite oranges.
ReplyDeleteGreat block! I think I would love to try it in green blue and white! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteNo doubt it would be made using blacks and reds! Nice job!
ReplyDeleteI would use blues and whites with a dash of yellow. Just leave a comment on my blog if my name is chosen.
ReplyDeleteI would love to make it in black and white with shades of grey OR gold and blue (for my DIL who loves those colors). I tried to become a follower, but it didn't work, so I'll try later.

ReplyDeleteNew follower via GFC
ReplyDeleteNew follower. I would probably use blues, blacks, grays, and whites.
ReplyDeleteI, too, enjoy solids. Unfortunately, I live in the back of beyond and the prevailing feeling of area elderly shop owners is, "Oh, no, we don't keep solid. Look at this Fossil Fern. It is just like a solid" Well.It does not replace solid white. Or any other solid I have to order online.
ReplyDeleteI am using lots of Hoffman 1985's these days. I think I'd use teals & peaches with a dark brown to make your block. Congrats on the cover! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI think I would use greys, blues and gold. thanks!
ReplyDeleteI follow your blog. thank you and congrats on a wonderful block and being on the cover!
ReplyDeleteI would have to make mine scrappy. Probably using red/white/blue colors. Congratulations. And thanks for the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteHappy to be a follower.
ReplyDeleteI use blues a lot, so I would most likely make the windows a light blue and find a good dark color for the frames, make a rich brown. Your block looks like it would be fun to play around with different color options. Congratulations on making the cover.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your block being selected for QM 100 Blocks v5. I selected your block as my favorite yesterday on fabric sponsor's post. It is nice to read more background on your design. Orange, blue, and aqua would be nice colors to use in the design.
ReplyDeleteLove your new block. I've always been into strong geometrics and solids. I'm also in my deep purple phase, so I would probably experiment with greys, creams, and. . .deep purple!!
ReplyDeleteLove your block! That table topper is crazy! I'd have to tone down the palette for me, I'd probably go with my current obsession colors which are grays, pale lime green and blue green.
ReplyDeleteand I follow your blog and like you on Facebook, what more could you ask for? ;) Plus I have pinned almost every Modern Monday on Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteA lighter orange, and I'd switched the dark gray with the lighter blue color. I like the strong graphic effect, though.

I will have to try it out. Thanks for sharing you pattern and Congrats on another 100 Block issue. I look forward to see what you come up with..Judith, Texas
ReplyDeleteLove the graphic look of your block. I'd like to make in a black, white & red colorway with lots of different fabrics. Thank for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI would do it in purple and grey or purple and pumpkin orange. Maybe dark blue and yellow and grey for a night sky with windows. I too love solids or almost solids (like Mirage or Blenders) and I don't like big prints, because I feel they get in the way of the block design or pattern.
ReplyDeleteI like the topper better than the single block, because I like the secondary pattern and the movement throughout the quilt.
I follow your blog and I`d probally make it in green, white and yellow
ReplyDeleteI solids, too, but also like small prints that read like solids. I think I would like to use some small reds, greens, and White Christmas prints to make a bed runner and matching pillows with this pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a very interesting block. I am starting to use solids again. I would make it with navy, orange and turquoise --- with, maybe, some cream.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cool block. Right now I'm into Navy, Aqua and white together. It has a Summer feel.
ReplyDeleteI think I might make the dark grey a little darker, the light grey about the same, the orange more red, then a variety of colors in place of the blue. . . . then there is the temptation to fussy cut something to go into the larger spaces.
ReplyDeletesolids... creams and reds i would say,
ReplyDeleteim a new follwer!
thank you
I'd make it in teal, aqua, cream and orange!

ReplyDeleteI'd use blue and yellows with a splash of green using your block design. Thanks "sew much" for this chance to win!!
ReplyDeleteI love orange so the colors you started with really strike a chord with me... I'd be interested to see this in shades of blue - closer in color with less contrast - and see what that does?
ReplyDeleteI love the combo of aqua and red and then cream for the 3rd color.
