Modern Monday - Block 45

Block 45 - Monument
I think it looks more like a birthday cake (which is more appropriate since today is my baby's 14th birthday!) but no, it's a block dating from the Victorian days - probably around President Garfield's death in 1881. On the traditional block, you would embroider the name of your deceased loved-one on the second row from the bottom. I chose this block because I attended the funeral of a good friend's father yesterday and I thought it was fitting to honor the day. He was a great man who I knew and respected all my life. Funny how we were just going to weddings and baby showers. Now we're going to funerals. Such is life.

I chose my usual palate. I was going to use all prints on gray, but it really looked too busy so I threw in some solids to tone it all down. I think that was the right thing to do.
  • Cut strips about 2" wide from each colored fabric. They will stair-step in size so cut the longest one 6 1/2" or longer, then 5 1/2", 4 1/2", 3 1/2", 2 1/2" and 1 1/2".
  • Cut the gray strips about 2" wide. Each row will need two strip each. These will also stair-step, but I cut them all about 4" long. They will be trimmed at the end, so exact length doesn't matter. I love that about these blocks! If I were make 20 of them, I'd measure them out to save some time, but for one it doesn't matter so much.

Lay out your strips as shown. You can start to see where we're going with this...

Sew the gray strips in between the colored strips. Press.

Before sewing together in rows, you'll have to trim the strips. I didn't photograph this step, but it's important. This is your chance to make the wedges. Trim them as wonky or as straight as you want. Just make sure your wedges aren't too wide or else you'll cut off too much on the top and bottom row. I made my bottom row super-wide to account for some of that variation. If you stick pretty close to 1 1/2" to 2" wide wedges you'll be okay.

When done trimming your wedges, sew them into rows and trim to 6 1/2".
