Block 46 - Ships
I think this is as traditional as it gets! Blue and white - simple, graphic, beautiful!Classic! |
From the blue, cut 2 - 2 3/8" squares* AND 1 - 2" x 6 1/2" strip.
From the white, cut 2 - 2 3/8" squares* AND 2 - 2" x 5" strips AND 1 - 2" x 3 1/2" strip AND 2 - 2" squares.
*I cut mine 2 1/2" and cut them down after sewing to ensure they are perfect. Do what makes you happy.
Here's all the cut pieces sort of laid out. I pressed the 2 blue squares and the 2 small white squares in half on the diagonal. |
Make 4 half-square triangle units from the 2 3/8" blue and white squares. I use the pressed line as a guide. Sew 1/4" on each side. |
Because I chain-pieced these, I then sewed the 2" square to one end of the blue strip ON the diagonal line right after the half-square triangle pieces. |
Cut the half-square units apart on the pressed line and press open to the dark. Trim to 2" if necessary. |
Complete the bottom of the strip by pressing to the white and cutting out the back two triangle pieces. leaving 1/4" seam allowance. |
Lay out your units like they will look when sewn. |
Sew the half-square triangle units into a four-patch. |
Press the center seam open. |
Sew the short white strip to the top of the four-patch. |
Add the long white strips to the sides. Press to the white after each seam is sewn. Sew the bottom of the boat on to complete the 6 1/2" block. |
