Modern Monday - Block 49

Card Trick
Block 49 - Card Trick
I thought yet another precision pieced block was in order. If you're new to precision piecing, just go slow, be aware of the 1/4" seam allowance and PIN!

You need four fabrics for the cards and one for the background.
 Cutting:
From the background, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles
2 - 7 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 4 half-square triangles

From EACH of the four card fabrics, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles. You only need 2 per card.
1 - 7 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 2 half-square triangles

You'll notice I didn't cut these oversize this time. Quarter0-square triangles are hard to deal with oversized. It's best just to cut and sew accurately.
Lay out the cut pieces as they will look when finished. This is a very tricky block to piece. It's easy to get confused so go slow and pay attention.

First make the center units that go on the outside rows.

Sew the two small triangles together and press to one side.

Sew the two units together and press.

Repeat with all four units.

Make four half-square triangle units for the outer four squares.

Make a quarter-square unit with the center triangles.

I did mine wrong and had to use the reserved triangles to get it right! Be careful when sewing!

Lay out the 9 units and sew together like a 9-Patch block. Pin so the points all come out reasonable well. The block will be 6 1/2" unfinished when done.

  1. FABULOUS block! Thanks for sharing! I love this block and I've pinned it to my "Quilty Goodness" board on Pinterest (with proper credit, of course!). Feel free to follow me if you'd like: http://pinterest.com/lipglass/quilty-goodness/
