Block 49 - Card Trick
I thought yet another precision pieced block was in order. If you're new to precision piecing, just go slow, be aware of the 1/4" seam allowance and PIN!
You need four fabrics for the cards and one for the background. |
Cutting:
From the background, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles
2 - 2 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 4 half-square triangles
From EACH of the four card fabrics, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles. You only need 2 per card.
1 - 2 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 2 half-square triangles
You'll notice I didn't cut these oversize this time. Quarter0-square triangles are hard to deal with oversized. It's best just to cut and sew accurately.
Lay out the cut pieces as they will look when finished. This is a very tricky block to piece. It's easy to get confused so go slow and pay attention. |
First make the center units that go on the outside rows. |
Sew the two small triangles together and press to one side. |
Sew the two units together and press. |
Repeat with all four units. |
Make four half-square triangle units for the outer four squares. |
Make a quarter-square unit with the center triangles. |
I did mine wrong and had to use the reserved triangles to get it right! Be careful when sewing! |
Lay out the 9 units and sew together like a 9-Patch block. Pin so the points all come out reasonable well. The block will be 6 1/2" unfinished when done. |
FABULOUS block! Thanks for sharing! I love this block and I've pinned it to my "Quilty Goodness" board on Pinterest (with proper credit, of course!). Feel free to follow me if you'd like: http://pinterest.com/lipglass/quilty-goodness/
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying all of these blocks, and I am using them for a challenge quilt I am working on. This block, however, I believe has an error in the instructions. It calls for 7 7/8" squares cut on diagonal once? Those are HUGE triangles and don't come close to lining up the way yours did. I'm a bit frustrated because I read your instructions several times and cut a bunch of fabric.. but hopefully I'll be able to use them for other blocks. Can you help me out on this? I liked this block and want to finish it! Thanks :-)
