Traditional Tuesday - Block 49
Block 49 - Card TrickCard Trick is a classic, but I really don't know why. It's a little tricky to make (get it? Tricky!). Seriously, it's a lot of work to get the points to match, but it's fun to look at when it's done.
I went with crayon box colors for this block. For some reason I can't resist brights and black!
From the background, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles
2 - 2 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 4 half-square triangles
From EACH of the four card fabrics, cut:
1 - 3 1/4" square. Cut in half on both diagonals to make 4 quarter-square triangles. You only need 2 per card.
1 - 2 7/8" squares. Cut in half on one diagonal to make 2 half-square triangles
You'll notice I didn't cut these oversize this time. Quarter0-square triangles are hard to deal with oversized. It's best just to cut and sew accurately.
Lay out the triangles as shown. This block is easy to get turned around so be careful at every step to make sure you're doing it right.
The block is made up of three different units. The four corners are half-square triangles.
The middle four units on the outer rows are these units. I don't know if they have a name or not!
And the center is a quarter-square unit.
Once you have pieced all the units and cut off the dog ears, lay them out as shown.
Sew the units together in rows and join the rows. Be careful to pin each step to make sure the points all come out perfect. You can see one of mine didn't come out perfect, but I'm leaving it!
