Day 3 of The Modern Applique Workbook blog tour

It's Day 3 and today is Angela Walter's day! Angela is the best quilter who I've ever worked with! No lie! Not only is her technique superb, her vision is even better. I don't know about you, but deciding on the quilting design is one of the hardest part of making a quilt. Although I do have some opinions, sometimes I am at a total loss for what to do. That's when I'm glad there are quilters for hire to help me figure out the best option for the quilt!
Mod is one of those quilts that I needed help with!

Mod
This is a very symmetrical quilt with large spaces to be quilted. I knew I wanted quilting on the shapes as well as the background. Since the circles are 18", that would be just too much unquilted space on the quilt. Angela put a different fill in each area of the circles, and each are identical on all four. Brilliant! It ties it all in together without "junking" it up visually. Having a different fill in all 16 shapes would be way to confusing visually.

On to the background. She immediately saw feathers! Perfect! I come from a traditional background so I have always loved feathers. I know some don't like feathers on modern quilts, but my philosophy is that beauty is always appropriate! So the feathers went in!

But the absolute brilliance of the quilting is the very center. Angela made a medallion-style flourish (for lack of a better word!) in the center. It's beautiful and contrasts with the flowing feathers perfectly! I couldn't be happier with the quilting on this quilt!
